Can social media be used with students? If so, how? With what tools? What age students? What are the benefits?
Social Media could and it is most definitely used by students on a daily basis. However, students tend to use social media not only to communicate with their friends but to stalk, harass, bully, and basically use it for all of the inappropriate things that it could be use for. Social media is so amazing; it could be use in so many positive ways, such as to communicate with friends and family that live in other countries; to post or create educational stuff; or even to help others when in need. Tools that could be helpful for students include but are not limited to prezi.com, dropbox, google apps, voicethread, instagram, twitter, pinterest, and many more. Students of all ages could and should be able to use social media because it could be beneficial; however, parents should monitor at all times. Some of the benefits of social media are to foster a sense of community in and out of the classroom, by creating a safe communication bridge between students and teachers; to develop a voice and building trust, students have opportunities to learn how to function successfully in a community, navigating a public social space and developing social norms and skills as participants in peer groups; to collaborate, students get to work, think, and act together; to provide a sense of independence and build resilience, tools can help students achieve independence because they don't have to worry about what others say; and many more. |
