In response to Dr. Baggio's quiz on "What is Your Learning Style?" My results were very reliable. - I ended up with an 80% visual style, 12% kinesthetic, and 8% auditory.
I personally think that I am completely a visual learner... Even when it comes to following directions; I can't just listen to someone (fiance) telling me where to go, if I don't see it, I won't make it there. PHASE 2
GOALS FOR THE PROJECT (Instructional Outcomes and User Outcomes) Student empowerment is fundamental to have successful students in the classroom. This study will be analyze the data collected in a survey, which will be administered to students through their program Naviance; students will have the ability to answer questions based on their personal experiences. A second survey (tentative) will be conducted after establishing a second survey, which will determine if students feel more assertive if they are able to ask questions in the classroom by using an app or web-tool. The purpose of this research study is to determine students’ self-perception of how they use technology to support their expression of ideas despite peer pressure and other factors. This research project will help us determine how technology tools can help students feel more confident and will explore the tools that students use on a daily basis in the classroom and outside the classroom. DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS This study will be analyze the data collected in a survey, which will be administered to students through their program Naviance; students will have the ability to answer questions based on their personal experiences. A second survey (tentative) will be conducted after establishing a second survey, which will determine if students feel more assertive if they are able to ask questions in the classroom by using an app or web-tool. The data collected will be analyzed to determine the level of confidence that the students have in the classroom and it will help determine if any web-tool might be used as a pilot study to help students feel more confident in the classroom when asking for help. PHASE 1
INTRODUCTION TO THE PROBLEM (Background and Need) Do technology tools help to make you feel more confident? If so, which tools help? Students hold back questions because they don’t want to be subject to peer-pressure, students don’t want to be judged or looked down upon. Students do not have a way to ask questions without feeling embarrassed. Eighth grade students; peer pressure; physical and social development. There are many factors that influence the assertiveness and behavior of students in the classroom, such as emotional development, peer-pressure, socioeconomic status, and technology and social media accessibility or usage. “Philosophers, cognitive scientists, anthropologists, and psychologists have argued convincingly that the act of questioning is central to thinking, to storing and communicating knowledge, even to several important types of social interaction. But while scholars of higher education have written extensively on the topic of questioning for more than a century, they have focused on how teachers ask questions and how students answer them, largely neglecting to consider that helping students develop their own questioning skills might be a valuable pedagogical objective in itself. In this question-centered pedagogy, the questions themselves are the answers.” (Bower, 2010) In other words, Bower states that researches have focused more on how teachers ask but haven’t focused in helping students asking fundamental questions. EDUCATIONAL CONTEXT What information do we have already? What do we need to find out? Students do not like to ask questions. They feel embarrassed and/or don’t want to look bad in front of their peers. Students emotional development is a key factor in students’ confidence. According to Ling Yiwen, he discovered that “not only intelligence-factors but also emotional ones play an important role in learning and they will develop gradually and interact with each other. Hence, it would become important to improve the students' basic spoken English so that they could participate classroom activities with confidence. What he have done in his integrated skills class was to make full use of the "Listening and Speaking Activities" of each unit. The parts include greetings, farewells, introducing others or oneself, and asking and giving information.. It includes lots of different basic sentences which can be used in a variety of situations. Each time, they finished learning the parts, he would ask one of his students to give them a morning speech the next day by making a full preparation before class, which necessarily involved functions from the first part.” Not only is he aware that emotional factors, such as confidence play an important role in learning but he is aware of the methods of learning that work better with his students. So what do we need to do? The tools for students to ask questions… What tools and how to increase the student's’ level of confidence. What are the technologies that can be leveraged and what are the challenges? “When students are using technology as a tool or a support for communicating with others, they are in an active role rather than the passive role of recipient of information transmitted by a teacher, textbook, or broadcast. The student is actively making choices about how to generate, obtain, manipulate, or display information. Technology use allows many more students to be actively thinking about information, making choices, and executing skills than is typical in teacher-led lessons. Moreover, when technology is used as a tool to support students in performing authentic tasks, the students are in the position of defining their goals, making design decisions, and evaluating their progress.” (Technology and Education Reform) There are so many different tools that can be used to improve communication between teachers and students, such as Tutorsclass, which allows teacher to tutor students online; Audioboo, which allows students to leave voicemails on the teacher's’ websites; Remind101, which reminds parents or students about homework; Padlet, which can be used as a board where students could ask questions; and many more. What do we know about the culture of the learners and their environment? There is no much diversity at Silverado; we have two very different socioeconomic statuses, the upper-class and the lower-class. The upper class advocates for themselves and have access to technology and the necessary tools. However, the lower-class do not have the tools that they need and most of the time parents are not aware of what is needed and how it could be used. The SITE module reviewed here contains an entire ICARE module but I will blogging about the part that we were responsible for, the I and C.
INTRODUCTION This module presented us a new model for understanding learning situations. I really love how they referred to the other models as the classical models making a statement that this model is different but why and how is it different? This site module introduction's explains how the "classic models" were largely based on behaviorist psychology and how this model tries to focus on how to make learning relevant to real-life situations. Cognitive psychologists to the conclusion that human cognition is especially well adapted for acquiring and applying knowledge in situations. This SITE MODEL explains how our cognition works by applying knowledge in different situations. I love how this model challenges the idea of how useful the knowledge that we learn in school helps us in real-life situations, in our daily life... Is it applicable? or do we just obtain the knowledge but doesn't use it. This model was created to design opportunities for application to realistic contexts. CONNECT I love how the model makes the connection and it explores the learner not as an isolated entity but in context. |
